EXAMPLE OF 1950's VINTAGE CLOTHING
Vintage clothing is always making a comeback, and one era that is always hot is the 50's, so here are some examples of 1950's vintage clothing so you can get the look yourself. They key is to stock your closet with pieces you love and that are easy to mix and match with your more modern clothing. Some things are easier to invest in such as tops, accessories and pants. Suits start to get more expensive, but they are super snazzy! Choose pieces you're comfortable in that give you that great 1950's vintage look that you'll be able to wear over and over again!
- Jackets. For the most authentic look, go with something that is loose enough to fit over a sweater but no more than that. The fit should be very slim, like most of the other clothing from this era!
- Sweaters. Cardigan and letterman sweaters are a huge part of any 1950's vintage clothing spree! Cardigans will look the most vintage and authentic if you go with darker and more neutral shades. Letterman sweaters were huge with younger men as well. If you can find a good one, be sure to snap it up! The 50's letterman sweater will always be in style!
- Button up Shirts. These shirts were worn with just about everything! Men wore them to work. For an authentic look to your 1950's vintage clothing, go for a slimmer fit shirt. Cowboy printed versions of these slim fitting shirts were worn often for more casual affairs.
- Bowling Shirts. These are some of the most visible pieces you can put in your new wardrobe and some of the best 1950's vintage clothes. Bowling shirts will typically come in navy or khaki colors. The short cuffed sleeve, the angular collar and the button front are the three most distinctive things about this great retro piece!
- Pants. When looking for great 1950's vintage clothing, finding pants can be tricky. As far as shorts go, look for higher waisted shorts in black, navy or khaki, with a cuffed bottom that hits at about the knee. Levi's 501 jeans have some great vintage pairs from the 50's and if you can find some, be sure to grab a pair. In terms of slacks, choose a vintage pair that feature a high waist, a tapered leg and a single pleat.
- Shoes. White or lighter colored driving shoes are quintessentially 50's as are the dressy, wing-tip shoes in black or brown. Most importantly, to cap off your new 1950 vintage clothes and your new look and wardrobe, don't forget the penny loafers!
NEW VINTAGE CLOTHING ~
I’m sure everyone has noticed the 80′s comeback. As if it ever stopped right? Although it’s not new, there are some things that weren’t being attempted until recently, especially by more popular designers. As it is today, you can get just about everything you could get in the 80′s but better, in some cases. They can range from way cheaper than a vintage shop to 10 times more. Forever21 for example has some great neon colors and 80s designs and much cheaper than any vintage boutique in Portland but, if they come from names like Diesel or Torn, you could pay $180 for acid wash jeans. This doesn’t mean vintage shops have lost their purpose. Now that people see these styles in a more public light, they might be less wary of wearing them in public. Styles they’ve admired from afar or stuffed away in a closet – wearing only to 80′s parties or in font of a mirror, can now be worn for a night out (put the silk jumpsuit away).
